*1945 in Newark, New Jersey, lives and works in Los Angeles and New York.
Barbara Kruger is known for her multi-layered photographs with provocative statements on topics related to commercial culture, feminism and identity politics.
After studying art at Syracuse University, School of Visual Arts and Parsons The New School for Design with Diane Arbus, she worked for several years as a graphic designer and art director at Condé Nast Publishing in New York.
Further experiences at magazines like as „Mademoiselle“, „House and Garden“ and „Aperture“ revealed to her early on the power of images, their potential to deter as well as seduce.
Her graphic works mostly consist of black-and-white photographs with catchwords superimposed in white lettering on a red background. In her photographs, she draws on US and British photographic material from the 1940s and 1950s. She often uses short, challenging sentences such as “You are a captive audience or I shop therefore I am. She focuses her attention on consumer and media culture and on feminism.
Kruger is one of the most important contemporary artists in the USA. Her works can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Con- temporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

„It has been wonderfully gratifying to work with Typico. They were able to print and spatialize my work in an impressively efficient and sensitive manner. I work with pictures and words because they have the ability to determine who we are, what we want to be and what we become.”
